Ambulance Drones, a Game Changer in the Ambulance Industry
The increasing miniaturization of medical devices facilitates the compact design of lifesaving medical aids such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and other medication that can be transported by a drone. Accelerating the speed of emergency response can be crucial in preventing deaths in the event of emergencies such as trauma, drowning or respiratory issues. Nearly 850,000 individuals are known to suffer an episode of cardiac arrest each year in the EU alone. However, the rate of survival is estimated at 8.4% among this population. This relatively low rate of survival is mainly caused by the lack of access to appropriate care in the first 10 minutes since suffering the condition. Of the several ongoing efforts to improve access to care for cardiac arrest patients, the ambulance drone designed by students at the Faculty of Industry Design Engineering from TU Delft, stands out.
The innovative prototype identifies the location of a cardiac arrest patient by tracking the location of a caller’s phone using GPS. The unmanned drone would deliver an AED to bystanders, while also guiding them to administer the procedure effectively with the use of Livestream audio as well as video connection, linked to emergency personnel. With receiving appropriate medical care in the early minutes being vital for survival in patients of cardiac arrest, the drone is designed to reduce response times for cardiac emergencies. The drone prototype is capable of reaching patients within a minute, covering a distance of 12 square kilometers at a top speed of 100 km/h. The novel drone is yet to be tested outside the laboratory on real patients to conclusively determine its ability to save lives in real scenarios.
Another notable example of similar efforts underway, Drone Delivery Canada (DDC) partnered with Peel Regional Paramedic Services to test the efficacy and response times of unmanned drones in delivering AEDs in comparison with traditional ambulance delivery. In South Korea, state-run Korea National Park Service (KNPS) recently announced plans to deploy 32 ambulance drones by 2020, to deliver emergency medical supplies at 16 national mountain parks spread across the country. The first-aid drone carries an AED, and uses GPS technology to locate victims. Nearly US$1.75 million of funds have been allocated for the development of the first-aid drones. With countries such as the Netherlands contemplating favorable legislation in the light of the technology’s ability to assist in timely, medical intervention, ambulance drones represent a game changer in the ambulance industry. The ambulance drone can extend the existing emergency infrastructure by employing a network of UAVs that are capable of delivering medical supplies.
